What is it?

Young Carers is a peer to peer support meeting for anyone who has experienced care giving. If you have, at some time, given care to another then this meeting is for you. The responsibility of looking after others can be overwhelming and we all need space to share those experiences. The Caring Collective exists to help people make sense of the caring journey they are on, share skills and experiences, and find a space where their stories are heard and respected. Anyone who's had any experience caring for a parent, taking on a role they necessarily didn't want or feel capable of, or have felt like their responsibilities of looking after someone have left them feeling isolated, this group is for you.

Why did it start?

Kate's, from The Caring Collective, experience caring for her mum throughout the past four years has been a total one, and there isn’t a part of her life that hasn’t had to alter in some way - for better and worse. If you have any experiences of caring for a parent, taking on a role you didn’t necessarily want or feel capable of, or have maybe felt like your responsibilities of looking after someone have left you feeling isolated, then come along...

What to expect?

The meetings were created to give space to comfortably discuss experiences of caring for someone, and everything that involves, in an understanding environment, in the knowledge that your experiences are shared with others who can relate. At the beginning of each meeting, attendees take it in turns to introduce themselves and the person or people they are in attendance for. We also share out pronouns to create a safe and open space for all. From then there is no pressure at all to speak, many people attend our meetings just to listen. The hosts of the meeting will then ask the group if anyone has anything they would like to bring into the space. Whatever a person has to say is relevant and they are welcome to bring anything to the meeting. All attendees are asked to respect the privacy of the space and treat others and ourselves with kindness throughout.
